The Juice Shop

The Juice Shop has been called a cult. Regulars come in daily and don’t take off their sunglasses. There are celebrity sightings, and that raises the status of the brand. This is a new type of luxury wellness. The rainbow of juices quench thirst, boost immunity, and detoxify. My new job included taste-testing the juices daily, offering samples to everyone who walked in the door and sharing my passion for the natural beauty products we sold. I was drinking the left-over green juice, living the LA dream.

It started with two weeks of rigorous training. I had to taste all the juices and learn how to describe them, like a wine sommelier. We had juices of every color: maroon beet, emerald spinach, and pink strawberry almond milk. Then there were the herbs, sold in small glass jars with doodled labels. I had to learn all about the benefits and what to recommend for different ailments. I liked the witchy aspect of the job. It wasn’t far off from the healing sessions I had been offering people. Except rather than meditation and energy work, now I’d just recommend the jar best suited to them.

Tara, who’d served me the first time I came to the shop after bumping into Oz at The House of Intuition, became my teacher. She had pink tinted hair and kind eyes. We would arrive at 6:30am, the refrigerators snoring loudly. Tara wore a baggy Mickey Mouse sweatshirt until the shop warmed up. The uniform was either all white or blue jeans. We were provided with white aprons.

The store’s decor was minimal and clean, with large potted plants on the floor like a Japanese garden on a spaceship. There was a sense of takeoff and landing in the daily routine. Cesar was waiting in his pickup when we arrived with the daily delivery of fresh juice from the main kitchen. There was a detailed checklist of tasks to complete every shift. Right on schedule, at 7am I checked off “put juices away,” and “unlock door.” I got a sense of clarity and simplicity from this daily routine.
